A water softener in Dripping Springs, TX is almost always paired with well treatment, because of what the wells here pull up. Pull the log on a well drilled anywhere around Dripping Springs and it reads like a cross-section of the Hill Country. A few inches of rocky soil. Then the Upper Glen Rose: alternating limestone, shale and marl beds that perch shallow water and feed the seep springs along Onion Creek. Below that, the Middle Trinity (Lower Glen Rose, Hensell, Cow Creek), where most wells in the Hays Trinity district produce, and where across much of the Onion and Barton Creek watersheds the water runs brackish, with dissolved solids above 1,000 mg/L. Under it sits the Hammett shale, and beneath the shale the Lower Trinity, which the groundwater district notes is where most wells east of RM 12 now finish, because the Middle Trinity water is poor and unreliable.
The number on that log that matters most in 2026 is the static level. A local driller quoted by KUT in March put Dripping Springs and Wimberley water levels at around 660 to 690 feet, against roughly 500 feet historically. That depth decides whether you own a pump problem, a water-quality problem, or both. It is why Absolute Water Solutions opens every Dripping Springs job with a test rather than a catalog.
What each layer leaves in the water
Every formation has a fingerprint. The Glen Rose carries evaporites, so as dissolved solids climb, magnesium and sulfate climb with them: a bitter edge, a laxative effect at high doses, sometimes a sulfur-like note. Brackish Middle Trinity water tastes salty, leaves white residue and corrodes fixtures; a softener alone does nothing about that, and reverse osmosis is the right tool. Hardness is the one constant. No Dripping Springs utility publishes a hardness figure, but the nearest USGS-sampled Glen Rose wells, nine to twelve miles out, measured 320 to 348 mg/L as calcium carbonate, roughly 19 to 20 grains per gallon. Treat that as a neighborhood reading, not a forecast for your tap. A water softener in Dripping Springs gets sized from the number we pull at your faucet during water testing, and nothing else.
Iron and hydrogen sulfide are the two things the public record does not settle here. Neither appears in the district's published well surveys, which is exactly why we test for them instead of assuming. When a Driftwood-side well does show orange staining or a rotten-egg smell in the hot water, iron and sulfur removal is a separate oxidizing stage ahead of the softener, not a larger softener.
Four meters, one aquifer
Inside the city and along US 290, the geology arrives pre-blended. Dripping Springs Water Supply Corporation pumps four Trinity wells at its plant on RR 12 south of town, near the Onion and South Onion Creek confluence, and blends that groundwater with Lake Austin surface water bought from the West Travis County PUA. The 2025 water-quality report shows what the well side contributes: fluoride at 2.02 mg/L, enough to trigger the mandatory dental-fluorosis notice for children under nine, and lithium averaging 35.57 micrograms per liter. Chloramine averages 1.87 ppm. In the Mercer Street core, that blend meets galvanized and copper plumbing in houses with no softener loop at all.
The City of Dripping Springs, the Belterra water districts and Headwaters MUD resell WTCPUA lake water, chloraminated at a higher 2.98 ppm average. That network had a rough year: a filtration failure in November 2025, boil-water notices for Cannon Ranch and Driftwood Golf & Ranch Club in March 2026 and for Belterra in August, then mandatory Stage 3 once-a-week watering from August 25. For those homes, treatment means catalytic carbon for chloramine (standard carbon underperforms on it), a softener for scale, and a UV stage on the house side so a notice in the news does not send you to the store for jugs. We install Viqua UV systems.
Past the city limit: wells, cisterns, septic
Most Dripping Springs addresses sit outside the city, on acreage in Hidden Springs Ranch, Sunset Canyon, Hays Country Acres, Howard Ranch and Rim Rock, where the log above is the water supply. The Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District has been in its most restrictive drought stage since September 2024: a 40 percent curtailment and no new non-exempt well permits, and by March 2026 every monitored well sat below its historic level. Deeper draws pull silt, so a sediment prefilter and pressure-side protection go into nearly every well water treatment system designed for this area. The first big fall rain on Onion Creek does the opposite job, flushing turbidity and bacteria into karst wells, which is when the UV lamp earns its keep.
The district and its neighbors are actively promoting rainwater harvesting, and cisterns are common on new ETJ lots. Rainwater is soft but not sterile; it wants sediment, carbon and UV before it reaches a tap. Meanwhile the city's wastewater plant is at capacity and cannot accept new connections, so ETJ homes are on septic, and Texas law requires any softener draining to a septic system to regenerate on demand rather than on a timer. Point-of-use RO discharge to septic is expressly allowed. We size to the rule, not around it.
Subdivision by subdivision
Saratoga Hills, Sawyer Ranch and Ledge Stone mix DSWSC and WTCPUA meters with private wells depending on the plat, so we confirm the source at the address before quoting. Caliterra along RR 12 and the newer Big Sky Ranch and Arrowhead Ranch tracts are on utility water, mostly in homes built since 2010 with a pre-plumbed loop and a builder-grade or missing softener. The Driftwood side is wells, rainwater and aerobic septic, and the treatment train follows accordingly.
The drive from Spicewood
We are based in Spicewood, about 20 road miles and 36 minutes away: SH 71 east, Hamilton Pool Road south past Reimers Ranch, then RM 12 into town. Bret has run the company since 2003, every install is done by our own crews, and the TCEQ license (WT001370) and insurance are current. Visits are scheduled Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Call (512) 587-8188 or request a free estimate, and bring the well log if you have one. We read them.
